"On foot!"
says Evangelos Drygiannakis, the Myli Taverna's host whenever people ask him how to get there.
As the parking is located on the other side of the gorge by the road from
Rethymnon
to Chromonastiri.
The
last 300 meters therefore have to be done on shank's mare:
A coarsely paved path leads down into the gorge and to a bridge which crosses the Mills' river, and then continues on the other side back in parallel to the river to the taverna for some meters.
|
| |
Real
hikers will however take a different way: They climb from the gorge's northern exit upwards.
So
they will pass the deserted village of Kato Myli and the numerous decayed water mills which gave both the river and the gorge their names.
And
they will rest at the Myli Taverna before continuing to the upper end of the gorge.

|
The
inhabitants of the tiny village of Pano Myli built the new settlement of Nei Myli (next to the parking) in the 1960ies, and left the old place.

Many
years after Evangelos renovated his birthplace and changed it to the taverna which nowadays attracts many guests to return frequently.
The
special charme does not only result from the luxurious green surroundings, provided with water all-year by the narrow creek.
Mainly
it is the unexcelled freshness of the dishes as most of the ingredients are grown just around the taverna.
|
| |
In
order to meet the same demand for meat and beverages as well, Evangelos built a cableway from the parking to the taverna.
They
use it every day for the transportation of goods.
The
cablecar can carry up to 300 kgs - it is however not designed to transport passengers.

In
case that someone should after dinner taste a little bit too much of the excellent self-distilled Tsikoudia and now fear the way back to the parking, Evangelos knows what to do:
The Myli Taverna has a completely furnished guest-bedroom.
You
can also send your reservation in advance and on demand even for fullboard.
Just
drop an
E-mail
- the host speaks English.
